How to get to Elba
Known as Italy’s third-largest island, Elba is part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago lying between the west central coast of Italy and the northern half of Corsica. Since the 1950s Elba has become a favourite travel destination and every year thousands of visitors choose to discover its beauties. The travel industry gives tourists several opportunities to reach Elba:
By ferry: regular ferries operated at least half-hourly in summer by three ferry companies link Piombino and Portoferraio (the main town on Elba) or Rio Marina (Toremar (www.toremar.it),Moby Lines (www.moby.it) and Blunavy (www.blunavytraghetti.com) ). The crossing (about 10 km) takes an hour.
By quick ferry: Corsica Ferries (www.corsica-ferries.it) runs a quick ferry service (30 min.) for both passengers and cars.
By plane: the Elban airport is located in La Pila, 2 km northeast of Marina di Campo. Air links from/to Elba are operated throughout the year and more frequently in summer. Domestic flights are from/to Milano Malpensa, Bergamo Olio al Serio, Bologna and Pisa while international flights are from/to Bern and Zürich (Switzerland) or Friedrichshafen and München (Germany). By car: if driving from Milan (northern Italy) take the A1 motorway towards Parma Ovest and the A15 towards Genova-Livorno (A12); take then the exit road to Rosignano and drive towards Venturina-Piombino Marittima along the Aurelia road. If driving from north-east take the A1 motorway Bologna-Firenze-Pisa-Livorno, take then the exit road to Rosignano and continue up to Piombino Marittima. If driving from southern Italy take the A12 motorway Roma-Grosseto, continue up to Rosignano Marittima and proceed until Piombino Marittima.
By train: Piombino Marittima is your arrival station, lying midway between Pisa and Rome (check the schedule: www.trenitalia.com ).
By bus: Sita and Atm Bus Companies operate public transportation between Florence and Piombino Marittima (it takes roughly 2 hours and thirty minutes), otherwise the Lineaservizi Bus Company runs regular service from Milan to Piombino Marittima (the journey takes little more than 6 hours).
